Meg Massey is a writer, strategist, and activist shifting power for a more just and sustainable world.

Meg is the co-author of the award-winning book Letting Go: How Philanthropists and Impact Investors Can Do More Good By Giving Up Control. Based on more than 200 interviews with changemakers around the world, Letting Go tells the story of the grantmakers and impact investors shifting decision-making power toward people with lived experience of the socio-economic and environmental problems they seek to solve. She is also the co-founder of Proximate, a new nonprofit media platform that builds on Letting Go’s message to share more stories from the global movement to shift power. Most recently, Meg joined the new Social Finance Institute as Associate Director.

Meg began her career as a journalist — writing for national outlets like Time, CNN Business, and Parade — and now, along with her role at Proximate, she regularly contributes to publications like Impact Alpha and Impact Entrepreneur. She was also a weekly columnist for the financial news site Karma. Her writing has appeared in the Chronicle of Philanthropy, Nonprofit Quarterly, and other outlets. She’s delivered guest lectures on her Letting Go research at Harvard, Oxford, Stanford, Georgetown, and Boston College, in addition to speaking roles at major impact investment conferences around the world.

Outside of her writing, Meg is a seasoned communications strategist. She has consulted for leading global social sector leaders and worked in senior outreach & communications roles for Upaya Social Ventures, the Global Steering Group for Impact Investment (GSG), and the Urban Institute’s Research to Action Lab.

Meg earned her BA magna cum laude from Mount Holyoke College and her MA in government from Georgetown University. Born and raised in New England, she now lives in Washington, D.C. with her partner and her dog. She is active in DC’s arts scene and loves travel, yoga, rock climbing, costume parties, British television, and true crime podcasts.
